GEO FENCING
WHAT IS A GEOFENCE?
A geofence is a virtual barrier created around a physical location. When a tracked vehicle or asset crosses this virtual line, an alert is sent to the nominated device/s. The alert can be reviewed, and the owner is able to act on the information to prevent theft or recover stolen items quickly and effectively.
HOW ARE GEOFENCES CREATED?
Geofences can be any shape or size and use longitude and latitude to specify the geofence location on a virtual map. They can be set up simply and quickly, thus ensuring that you have peace of mind that your assets are where they should be all the time within the geofence boundaries. Geofencing works in conjunction with GPS tracking hardware and software, and geofence monitoring happens 24/7 with WHG Technologies’ advanced tracking solutions. Whenever an asset enters or leaves the geofenced area you’re able to see, on your desktop or mobile device what has moved over the virtual boundary, and act quickly. These virtual perimeters enable you to “lock off” an area and at the tap of a button “take down” the virtual fence.
“SMS alerts to your phone as soon as an asset leaves the geofence is a key feature for me. It works fantastically!” says Jim Callewaert, Owner, Eastside Management Solutions.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF GEOFENCING FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
In the case of Eastside SMS, WHG Technologies set up a geofence around their yard that allows them to configure ‘go’ and ‘no go’ areas through the geofencing functionality. Notification alerts are sent via email, text message, on-screen within the portal, as well as push notifications on the app. Notifications can be configured to be sent each time the asset arrives and leaves the site or only when movement happens after scheduled operating hours.
"When the trucks leave, I have a text message sent to my phone and I can then have them monitored. So, if at 2am someone steals one of the vehicles and drives out the yard, I’m going to know straight away and I can go online and start tracking the vehicle. As soon as I knew they could do that, I was sold.”
With these notifications in place, managers are able to assess why an asset is on the move and notify the authorities quickly if it looks like a theft is in progress.

WHAT ASSETS CAN BE GEOFENCED?
Geofencing products form part of the WHG Technologies’ Fleet Management solutions. Geofencing can be used to monitor anything from tools to cars, trailers to trucks. If it can be tracked, it can be geofenced.
HAVE ALL THE INFO AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
The advantages of Geofencing includes:
-
Monitoring the geofenced location
-
Accessing records of what vehicles and equipment have arrived and left that location at a given time
-
Finding out at a glance, what assets are currently at that location
-
Monitoring productivity by analysing how long vehicles and equipment spend and how they behave whilst within a geofenced location.
BE SURE YOU ARE COMPLIANT WITH THE RULES OF THE ROAD
Geofences can also assist with State Department of Transport compliance issues, especially when operating vehicles which are prohibited from certain routes due to mass or height limits. Setting up exclusionary zones via geofencing is simple with WHG Technologies and is an effective method of ensuring that drivers know to avoid these areas. When there is a breach, a manager is able to respond to correct it immediately.
